Economics of Amelioration of Soil Sodicity
The 2020-22 results from soil amelioration research trials (established by USQ1803-002RTX) were able to deliver significant yield increases from subsoil tested treatments with various combinations of deep ripping, organic matter, gypsum and lime compared to untreated (control) plots. Indications from similar southern Australian research (DAV00149) suggest improved crop performance in response to subsoil amelioration of dispersive clays could last up to five years, or more in some cases. While there is strong interest from many Northern growers in subsoil amelioration, the case for a profit opportunity in northern NSW and QLD continues to advance and would be enhanced by further long-term crop performance data post amelioration. This investment will continue to monitor all current (core) research and on-farm demonstration sites for agronomic outcomes and include the data into a broader decision support system to support agronomic understanding and financial investment.
