Development of an Indigenous Engagement Strategy for fishing interests with a focus on Commonwealth fisheries
This project seeks to develop a strategy to engage Indigenous fishing interests and the management agencies responsible for Commonwealth fisheries, to meet new requirements under the Commonwealth fisheries resource sharing framework. This strategy will also be relevant for other Australian jurisdictions, since Indigenous customary fishing usually takes place closer to the shoreline which is regulated by the state and territory governments. The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) are key stakeholders in this project and research outputs will be shared with the Australian Fisheries Management Forum (AFMF), comprising of the Directors of Fisheries in each jurisdiction, the Commonwealth and its Indigenous subcommittee.
