Projects
Development of alternative welfare standards for the Australian chicken meat industry
This project will produce a clear, practical animal welfare standard for Australia’s chicken meat industry that is based on the best available evidence and is practical to implement. It will set out what good welfare looks like, and supported by clear performance indicators, guidelines and auditable requirements across key operation domains.
By reviewing Australian and international research and existing standards, then refining the draft alternate standard with industry, the project will build broad industry input and confidence, helping address barriers to adoption and supporting consistent implementation. The resulting standard, together with a proposed governance and independent auditing model, will enable credible third party verification and provide a shared reference point for welfare improvement, risk management and transparent assurance.
A high-level impact assessment and gap analysis will inform commercial implementation considerations and prioritise areas of future welfare risk, guiding ongoing updates. Through promotion on industry websites and a final outcomes presentation, the work will strengthen industry capability to demonstrate best-practice welfare, support market and stakeholder expectations, and drive continuous, science-led welfare improvements over time.
