Develop a strong current warning system and inform knowledge of the nearshore current regime influencing the Western Rock Lobster fishery

This project aims to develop a predictive warning system for ocean conditions that can be used by the Western Rock Lobsters fishers to improve efficiency. When currents reach high enough velocities they can drag the gear floats below the surface, making the retrieval of the pots impossible. Furthermore, even faster velocities can drag fishing gear into greater water depths resulting in their loss. In addition, this project will generate the fine-scale information on near-shore water velocities required to examine the importance of ocean currents to the puerulus (transitional stage of the lobster) settlement rates across the centre of the fishery.
