Collagen Peptide Production from Bovine Bone

A number of low value products are produced at beef processing plants, such as bone chips. Increasing the value of bone chips will improve the profitability and competitiveness of our beef processors. Current extraction methods often have low yields and involve high chemical usage, increasing costs and environmental concerns. This project aims to develop a cost-effective, sustainable method to convert bovine bone chips into high value hydrolysed collagen with applications in food, beverages, and cosmetics. The process is designed to achieve maximum value of the bovine bone lower value streams, with all outputs (collagen and calcium phosphate/diphosphate) utilised as commercial commodities. Assuming a successful project outcome, the opportunity exists for processors to collaborate with a commercial enterprise to increase the value of beef bone chips. It is also possible that further work could be undertaken with sheep bone chips.
