Carbon accounting tools. Choosing a clear pathway to creating a carbon baseline
The project aimed to increase the adoption and use of carbon accounting tools among producers. The project utilized the Greenhouse Accounting Frameworks (GAF) sheep/beef and cropping baseline tool, which are free, simple, and continuously updated to ensure accurate carbon baseline measurements. To facilitate data recording, the AgPro Management annual benchmarking form was adjusted to incorporate detailed data that could be easily transferred into the GAF tool.
One-on-one learning experiences were a key component of the project, with the project manager visiting 10 core producers in the Northern StockPro group to collect and record data. This data was then transferred into the GAF tool to calculate carbon baselines. Discussions with each producer on their results and potential changes helped build confidence and knowledge in using this tool with the simplicity of it also allowing producers to make adjustments easily and increase their understanding quickly.
The project successfully increased awareness and knowledge of carbon accounting tools among producers, with AgPro Management continuing to offer these tools as part of their annual benchmarking program.
