Can novel seismic survey sources mitigate potential impacts to fisheries?
3D Marine Seismic Surveys (MSS) are used by the petroleum industry to locate potential oil and gas deposits. Despite regulatory controls, there is often a perceived conflict between the survey proponents and the fishing industry, which worries that the MSS will harm fishery stocks and their livelihoods. To potentially break this destructive cycle, this project aims to test new seismic sources or ways of using current sources to mitigate potential impacts on marine animals. It will compare standard and alternative seismic sources and determine their impacts on the commercial scallop and the southern rock lobster.
