Aggregated Waste to Energy (W2E)

A circular economy approach will be utilized to explore how waste to energy (W2E) facilities aggregating non-recyclable waste from processing plants and councils can assist to reduce thermal energy, power and waste disposal costs for red meat processing plants. This opportunity can use locally derived wastes that would otherwise be landfilled whilst simultaneously reducing fossil fuel consumption. From 1 July 2019, Queensland will fall into line with all other mainland states by introducing a landfill levy. Further, Australian natural gas prices are now tied to global markets and have an unpredictable but increasing trend. The historical convenience of liquid and gaseous fuels and grid power has resulted in businesses now paying higher energy costs than they need to - Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows that in the past two years, power prices are up 14.5%, with natural gas up 11.2%, against an economy-wide CPI increase of 3.7%.
