Ampan: Transforming Rice Waste into High-Value Building Materials
Ampan is advancing sustainable manufacturing by converting rice straw and rice husk by-products of rice farming into high-performance panel boards. With growing demand across the housing, transport, and agricultural export sectors, Ampan has completed extensive R&D trials and university-led analysis, and is now preparing for commercial production.
Using a whole crop management approach, Ampan’s process delivers multiple benefits per hectare of rice grown:
- No field burning
- Growers are paid for straw
- Increased water-use efficiency: 8.5 tonnes of rice waste yields 255 panels (2.4m x 1.2m x 20mm), valued at $12,750 per hectare
These panels will be offered to the timber wholesale market at $50 each, supporting domestic supply chains and creating regional employment opportunities.
Ampan holds intellectual property and patent protections for its innovations. With over $80 million spent annually on imported panels and $45 million on single-use pallets, Ampan’s solution offers a scalable, local alternative. The Australian pallet system alone requires up to 6 million replacement boards annually.
Ampan’s model presents a consistent substrate supply, strong market demand, and measurable agricultural and social benefits.
