RMIT: Seeking Partners to Commercialise PYROCO for Waste Valorisation

Opportunity for

  • Commercial partners, corporates, investors, waste producers, private waste management companies or other businesses interested in commercialising new innovative waste management technology.
^This opportunity is only for professional and sophisticated investors.

Opportunity description

Industry challenge

Australia's regulatory landscape is continuously evolving, with a growing emphasis on sustainable waste management and valorisation. In the future, certain wastes like FOGO and animal industry wastes may no longer be accepted at composting facilities or landfills. Current recycling processes for vegetable and engine oil are energy-intensive and leave residue ash with high metal concentrations, limiting their future use in the asphalt industry. Only 70% of tyres in Australia are recycled or used for energy recovery through energy-negative processes, with the remaining 30% still ending up in landfills. Waste producers, private waste management companies, and government councils must act quickly to identify opportunities to address this emerging challenge.

The innovative PYROCO technology offers a promising solution. Demonstrated to convert FOGO, biosolids, and biomass into biochar, while producing recoverable high-grade heat energy, PYROCO addresses these challenges effectively. The technology operates under energy-neutral conditions with minimal exergy losses. It requires a small footprint area (100 m2/ 3-5 tonnes dry feedstock) and offers high economies of scale. Customizable and easy to transport, PYROCO boasts low operating costs and maintenance requirements, ensuring a high return on investment. By leveraging PYROCO, stakeholders can meet regulatory demands while promoting sustainable waste management practices.

Current opportunity

The Innovative Resources and Waste Technologies (iRWT) group at RMIT University seeks commercial partners for its patent protected PYROCO technology. PYROCO offers valorisation of FOGO, meat industry wastes, tyre wastes, cattle farm wastes, plastic wastes, and waste oils. Currently at TRL 7 and set for biosolids commercialization by 2029, we seek partners interested in commercializing the technology for other waste streams. The customizable technology can be adapted as a mobile solution on a truck. Depending on the feedstock, it can produce biochar, syngas, oil energy, or hydrogen, offering diverse opportunities for sustainable resource management.

Specifically waste producers and processors have the unique opportunity to partner with us to commercialize PYROCO technology for targeted waste processing and resource recovery. This partnership involves an investment to research, design, customize, and fabricate the reactor based on the specific waste type and desired end products (biochar, energy, or hydrogen). Key benefits include exclusive license for technology commercialization, enabling the use of PYROCO technology across multiple sites. Additionally, there is potential to explore spin-offs that offer revenue-based services to other waste producers and processors, creating new income streams and expanding market reach.

Investors and venture capitalists can capitalize on the emerging market for thermal based waste valorisation. The PYROCO technology, utilizing a fluidized bed heat exchanger design, ensures maximum heat transfer for treated waste. PYROCO is compatible for all types of valorisations, including Hydrogen and high value carbon materials production. This scalable design, with no moving parts, requires a small footprint and minimal maintenance. Known for energy efficiency and low operational costs, The PYROCO presents a compelling investment opportunity, offering a strategic entry into the resource recovery market.

Opportunity background

PYROCO technology has been developed over 8 years of research and development. The reactor design was conceptualized by chemical engineers with over 20 years of experience in thermal and fluidized bed designs. The design originated from the need to treat biosolids and enhance resource recovery, in partnership with a public sector. Till date $ 6 million has been invested into research and development of PYROCO. PYROCO has reached TRL 7, recent trials conducted were late 2023, and it was witnessed by a parliamentary member and other water utility representatives. During these trials, PYROCO demonstrated its capability for waste valorisation of FOGO, agricultural wastes, and biosolids. The success of PYROCO has gained significant traction, attracting interest from additional water utilities, councils, and even tyre waste processors, with plans for further trials currently underway

Potential other applications

The PYROCO technology can be used to produce CO, H2 from any waste material, other than biochar and energy. CO and H2 building blocks for many chemicals, including diesel and alcohol. The PYROCO technology can be used as a front end for different industries who are interested to produce biofuel.
