Paddock Mate: Nature-based planting solutions to reduce heat stress, improve productivity and build farm resilience

Opportunity for

  • Farmers interested in understanding their natural capital and taking practical action
  • Producer groups or networks interested in hosting on-farm validation trials
  • Supply chain, sustainability and natural capital partners
  • Organisations supporting nature repair, biodiversity and climate resilience outcomes

Opportunity description

Industry challenge

Australian farmers are facing increasing challenges such as heat stress, climate variability and environmental pressure, with direct impacts on livestock welfare, productivity and long-term farm resilience. For example, heat stress can reduce dairy production by 10–40 percent during high-temperature periods, with these events becoming more frequent and severe.

While many farmers are open to taking action for nature, uncertainty around cost, return on investment and trusted delivery pathways often limits uptake. Traditional environmental programs have not always aligned with farming business realities, often focusing on planting outcomes rather than solving practical on-farm challenges such as heat stress, water quality, erosion and risk management.

There is a clear need for solutions that treat nature as productive farm infrastructure, delivering measurable business benefits alongside biodiversity and sustainability outcomes.

Current opportunity

Paddock Mate is seeking farmers and partners to validate and scale a practical, end-to-end approach that uses targeted planting designs to address key farm challenges, including  heat stress reduction.

The opportunity focuses on:

  • On-farm baseline biodiversity and natural capital assessments
  • Custom planting plans aligned to farm objectives such as heat stress reduction, water management and productivity
  • Modelling of expected economic uplift and return on investment
  • Support for implementation, monitoring and reporting
  • Optional alignment with emerging frameworks such as nature repair markets, carbon opportunities and Accounting for Nature

Initial trials have demonstrated that relatively small, well-designed plantings can deliver significant productivity gains, including improved livestock comfort and milk yield in dairy, without compromising farm efficiency. Victorian producers may also be eligible to access support through the Victorian Government’s Trees on Farms program, reducing or offsetting costs during the validation phase.

Opportunity background

Paddock Mate was founded by a biodiversity scientist with extensive experience working alongside farmers to restore landscapes and improve farm resilience.

The service has officially launched, with multiple farmer trials underway and recognition as a professional service provider under Victoria’s Trees on Farms program. The current focus is on validating the model with producers, refining economic assumptions and preparing for broader national rollout.

Potential other applications

Beyond heat stress reduction, the Paddock Mate approach has potential applications across:

  • Water quality improvement, reduced irrigation costs and erosion control
  • Supply chain sustainability reporting and natural capital accounting
  • Biodiversity, nature repair and carbon-aligned plantings
  • Insurance and finance models that recognise reduced risk and improved resilience
