Dairy Australia: Management or Treatment of Dairy Effluent for Re-use on Farm

Opportunity for

  • Partners, researchers, and solution providers to address on farm management or treatment of dairy effluent (manure) to maximise opportunities to capture and (re)use energy, water and nutrients while minimising greenhouse gas emissions.

Opportunity description

Industry challenge

The increasing number of contained dairy production systems in Australia means that traditional manure effluent management and treatment options may not be feasible. These systems may have increased manure and shed washdown volumes, higher energy use and prices, land and water constraints. The industry is also striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity.

Current opportunity

Contained dairy systems produce an estimated 15-20% of the national milk pool and growing. The concentrated manure effluent volumes in these systems present an opportunity to more efficiently and economically get the most out of this organic resource. This creates a growing market for technologies that manage and treat effluent to enable on-site water recycling and reuse, on-site energy generation and nutrient cycling, increasing the industry’s productivity, profitability and environmental sustainability.

We aim to collaborate on innovative biological, chemical, or physical processes that enable safe treatment, reuse, or conversion. We are open to pursuing commercially aligned partnerships (where applicable) and contributing to trial/pilot costs to accelerate practical access and on farm adoption.

Suitable for solutions that are TRL Mid to late, (TRL5-9).
