Algaesys: Validating and trialling a carbon-negative wastewater treatment solution – partnership opportunity
Opportunity for
- Engineering firms and consulting engineers for licensing and to support trial deployments.
- Regional land councils and government agencies to identify, trial and validate applications in agricultural and municipal wastewater treatment
- Agricultural and industrial partners to explore trials for on-site validation and integration into existing water management systems
Opportunity description
Industry challenge
Managing wastewater efficiently and sustainably remains a major challenge for industries and regional communities. Traditional treatment methods are often energy-intensive, costly, and contribute to environmental issues such as high nitrate runoff, excessive chemical use, and greenhouse gas emissions. There is a growing demand for low-cost, carbon-negative alternatives that improve water reuse and soil health while reducing operational costs.
Current opportunity
Algaesys has developed a biological wastewater treatment system that uses algae, bacteria, and phototrophic organisms to efficiently remove nitrates, phosphates, heavy metals, and complex organics. This process enables the reuse of treated water for irrigation, hydroponics, and industrial applications while also generating biomass that can be used as fertiliser or stock feed. The system is low-energy, scalable, and operates off-grid, making it highly adaptable for agricultural and municipal wastewater treatment.
Algaesys is currently seeking partners to license their technology and for trials and validation:
- Engineering firms and consulting engineers to license the technology to then build and establish the plants
- Regional land councils and environmental agencies to identify water quality issues and trial Algaesys' system in farmland wastewater treatment applications.
- Agribusinesses, food processors, and municipalities looking to validate cost-effective wastewater treatment and water reuse solutions.
Opportunity background
The Algaesys system has been successfully operating for over 14 years, with proven applications in municipal wastewater, industrial processing, and agricultural use. The company is now launching its first Australian plant in Western Australia for an eco-retirement village, processing wastewater for irrigation.
Looking ahead, Algaesys is keen to expand validation trials in regional and agricultural settings, particularly in industries with high-nitrate runoff or saline water challenges. The company is also trialling its system with a large beverage manufacturer in 2025 to explore salinity reduction applications.
Potential other applications
Beyond wastewater treatment, Algaesys' system has potential applications in:
- Agriculture and horticulture – Improving water reuse and reducing nitrate runoff
- Mine site rehabilitation – Utilising algae-based fertiliser for long-term soil health
- Saline bore water treatment – A sustainable alternative to reverse osmosis
