Integrating recreational fishing information into harvest strategies for multi-sector fisheries
Recreational fishing (RF) is an important and often neglected component of fisheries in Australia. Recreational fishers in New South Wales(NSW) harvest substantial quantities of the State’s most popular species, with retained catches of dusky flathead, sand flathead, mulloway, and yellowtail kingfish exceeding commercial harvest. Despite this, recreational harvest in NSW has been monitored infrequently and rarely incorporated into stock assessments. Fisheries management in NSW is transitioning to a harvest strategy (HS) approach that includes all relevant sectors within a fishery. HS specify predetermined management actions necessary to achieve stakeholder objectives, as well as the monitoring and assessment required to track fishery performance relative to those objectives. The objectives of recreational fishers have not been elicited for specific fisheries in NSW, preventing the development of complementary indicators for commercial and recreational sectors within multi-sector fisheries. ‘FishPath’ is a leading harvest strategy decision support tool and “bottom up” engagement philosophy that allows experts and stakeholders to interactively contribute to harvest strategy development in a transparent workshop setting. This investment will identify and obtain relevant data on recreational fishing objectives and integrate the information into the FishPath software to support the development of guidelines for information use and draft harvest strategies for key multi-sector fisheries.
