Endoscopy of the upper respiratory tract at Australian Thoroughbred yearling sales: Can we do better?
Post-sale examination of the upper airways (scoping) is commonly performed at Australian yearling sales to determine whether there is evidence of upper airway dysfunction that might influence future racing performance, and hence nullify the sale. Laryngeal function is graded using a scale of 1-5, with grades 4 and 5 considered abnormal and resulting in a ‘fail’. However, buyers are increasingly concerned about the future performance of yearlings with grade 3 (intermediate) laryngeal function, which has led to an increase in pre-sale scoping. Preliminary research indicates that these yearlings, with grade 3 laryngeal function, achieve lower sales prices compared to yearlings with grade 1 and 2 (normal) laryngeal function, despite a lack of strong evidence to support this assumption. Additionally, there is evidence that different grading systems to assess laryngeal function may be more appropriate for predicting future performance. Regardless, the current sales scoping process may not be fit for purpose: that being to enhance buyer confidence and remove ambiguity. In this study we will first investigate the current satisfaction levels and concerns surrounding the yearling sales scoping process with Thoroughbred industry stakeholders (breeders and equine veterinarians involved in yearling endoscopy), via a series of focus groups. This will be followed by a large retrospective study (using a minimum of 5000 post-sales scopes) to evaluate the relationship between yearling laryngeal function and future performance. The results will be used to guide future recommendations regarding the yearling sales endoscopy process.
