Developing smarter and sustainable pear orchards

This investment is providing the pear industry with new technology and advanced management systems to improve fruit quality, maximise pear yield whilst increasing labour efficiency under increasing climate variability, including extreme heat. The project will investigate the long-term effects of tree density, rootstocks and tree training on yield, colour expression, sun damage, pack-out and other management inputs for new pear cultivars. In addition, recommendations for new sensor technologies to measure pear tree stress, crop load, tree size and fruit quality/maturity will be made. A clearer understanding of how increasing climate variability and extreme heat is likely to change the design of pear orchards will be delivered.
