Clover4bees pilot study

Concerns around access to floral resources for honeybees has resulted in the need to seek alternatives. This project will short-list the priority pasture legume species of interest to the honey bee industry. The short-listing process will be informed by field data that quantifies the floral attributes of 20 annual and perennial legume species across a range of environments. Subjective assessments of a species' relative value to the honey bee industry will be made in consultation with an expert industry advisory panel engaged to oversee the project.

This project will inform end users of viable species options to enhance the productivity of honey bees. It will also inform management practices, particularly as it relates to soil fertility, that will foster greater honey bee productivity and resilience under contrasting seasonal conditions. Extension and adoption activities will target graziers.

Other legume options that may add value to the Australian honey bee industry in the future, subject to further species or cultivar development, will also be identified. Further cultivar development may be recommended for some species to guide the pasture seed industry but will not be a direct output of this project.
