Case Studies - Stripe rust epidemic 2022 grower stories of management and yield impact.
A stripe rust epidemic hit wheat crops across eastern Australia during the winter cropping season of 2022, reducing yields in some paddocks by up to 50%. The wet seasonal conditions that led to the 2022 stripe rust epidemic are atypical, however climate forecasts indicate that the frequency of these events will increase in the future.
This project aims to help growers prepare for future stripe rust epidemics by sharing the management strategies of growers who successfully mitigated the impact of stripe rust across their farms in 2022. It will do this through a series of case studies that capture the successful growers' experiences and learnings.
The booklet will detail the various farming systems and describe the season and contributing factors that led to the stripe rust epidemic. It will also reference the Australian Cereal Rust Survey and the pathotypes (strains) present; the National Variety Trials (NVT) disease ratings, Crop Sowing Guides and Harvest Reports; and other resources and tools available to help growers make decisions such as the StripeRustWM app.
Peer-to-peer learning supports practice change and will help growers manage stripe rust epidemics in the future. The case studies will be published on the GRDC website and printed as a booklet by June 2023.
