Better understanding viral disinformation impacting Australia’s food and fibre system

In early 2021, Agthentic Advisory, in collaboration with the Institute of the Future, developed a horizon scanning report for AgriFutures Australia, titled Future Forces: A ten-year horizon for Australian Agriculture. One of the five major forces shaping the future of Australia’s food and fibre identified in the report was viral disinformation. The report explored, at a high-level, the drivers of viral disinformation, including new technologies, communication platforms, and social behaviours and norms, and the potential implications of more widespread disinformation in the food and fibre system. The purpose of this engagement is to dive deeper, providing industry with a more detailed understanding of the characteristics and types of disinformation threats and identifying approaches to proactively managing these threats. The outputs of this engagement will be a series of practical tools that help industry build a shared language around viral disinformation, bring examples of disinformation campaigns to life, and help stakeholders identify situation-appropriate pathways to take meaningful action.
