Alternatives to antibiotics in the layer industry

Antibiotics are widely used for the prevention, control and treatment of diseases and bacterial infections in human and animals. It is also widely used to enhance growth in livestock, including chickens. The Australian Egg industry is investigating suitable alternatives to antibiotics.

In this short project, all research and data on available alternatives to antibiotics for layers will be compiled. This review will provide an assessment on which alternatives are scientifically viable for use in commercial egg production and which are scientifically baseless. The researchers will then identify which alternatives can be practically used and which require further research to test/ prove their viability.
