A Stock Assessment Toolbox for Australian Fisheries

Fisheries stock assessment modelling is undertaken throughout Australia's jurisdictions. Modellers usually use sets of tools that have been developed in various programming languages and dedicated to a specific fishery. Although developing bespoke packages has advantages, the off the shelf (OTS) packages that are freely available for use by analysts, have been evaluated using simulations and been extensively peer reviewed. Transition to these packages is hampered by several constraints: but mainly, the packages are not in a single location and capacity needs to be built in their use.

This project tries to address these issues by:

  • linking all freely available international stock assessment packages into a single framework within FRDC's web system;
  • providing guidance as to which model is more appropriate for what kind of situations; and
  • providing links to resources created by the authors of packages such as test data and models.
