Rainstick: Indigenous electrobiology SAFE investment round and partner opportunity

Opportunity for

  • Deep tech and impact investors with an appetite for transformational technologies to complete our pre-seed round, see their involvement help us grow and access new opportunities.
  • Early adopters, growers, synthetic biology labs and seed producers interested in collaborating with Rainstick to leverage this novel technology into potential joint venture and licensed partnerships.
  • Early adopters who would like to see if Rainstick technology can help them produce more, cleaner and tailored products.
This opportunity is only for professional and sophisticated investors.^

Opportunity description

Industry challenge:

Producers are being asked to produce more outputs with less inputs, less land, less chemicals at a cheaper price with increasing regulatory pressures. This is not sustainable. Producers need a step change, something that is going to make all the other efforts make sense.

Like the thunderstorms that spark our planet, electrical influences on our growing systems are an untapped and overlooked resource that can bring about radical results. By controlling which electrical signals are given to plants and fungi, we can encourage certain behaviours around growth, nutrient use, nutrient density, speed, and – we hypothesise – someday even intergenerational epigenetic expressions to accelerate the process of selective breeding.

Whether it's for food, bioplastics, biomaterials, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals and other biological forms, we see a white space of opportunity for this novel technology. We don’t know exactly the total addressable market because every number we come up with seems unreasonable. We are market led and have a repeatable process to turn innovations to opportunity.

Rainstick is an Australian indigenous synthetic biology company that harnesses the power of lightning to transform the food, agriculture, materials, medical and research industries. Drawing from thousands of years of indigenous knowledge systems, Rainstick is an alternative to pesticides, fungicides and traditional genetic modification.

Current opportunity:

Rainstick is seeking:

  • Deep tech and impact investors with an appetite for transformational technologies to complete our pre-seed round see their involvement help us grow and access new opportunities.
Early results in shiitake mushrooms are 18% more, 24% faster and 0% mould.

Opportunity background:

Darryl Lyons' Maiawali people have been harnessing the power of lightning for tens of thousands of years. In January 2022, Mic Black (co-founder Provectus Algae), was introduced to Chris McLoghlin (co-founder of Fable Food Co), by Darryl Lyons (co-founder Escavox). They reviewed over 120 electroculture research papers spanning over 100 years. The team discovered significant barriers to scaling up production for food and synthetic biology producers.

Within a few months, they had developed a novel wireless delivery and control system and trials began quickly in home garages and cold rooms.

By the end of 2022, Rainstick had secured commercial space, built a research lab, and achieved excellent results in shiitake mushroom yield and speed, and direct inhibition of six species of mould.

Then they started talking to people.

Rainstick attracted investment with partners like Main Sequence Ventures, Startmate First Believers and more. The team was accepted into the CSIRO ON accelerator and featured on the front page of Forbes.com.au. By early 2023, Rainstick had deployed their first on-farm trial to prove scale-up, collected Letters of Intent, and began commercial talks with several producers. Rainstick would like to enter the Singapore market in 2024.

Potential other applications

Rainstick can be used to enhance crop yields, improve plant and fungi health, improve food quality and increase the nutrient density of food.

Rainstick may also be used for environmental purposes, such as bioremediation. It may help remove toxins and pollutants from soil and water, making it an effective tool for environmental cleanup.

Additionally, Rainstick may help in the viability of new bioproducts like bioplastics, leathers, and other materials.

Rainstick helps with more, cleaner and tailored produce through:

  • Enhanced cultivation techniques through adapting the biologic to various growing conditions
  • Enhanced expression of specific properties such as increasing specific psychoactive properties of certain mushrooms
  • Novel delivery systems improving efficacy and reducing side effects for pharmacological and nutritional applications
  • Scalability and improved unit costs.
