PIRSA: SA food pilot laboratory

Opportunity for

  • Established or scale-up food companies or food tech innovators looking to develop, test, trial or validate food products.

Opportunity description

Industry challenge:

How to Increase the processing of Australian primary produce such as grains and pulses into added value products is one of the industry challenges. Enhancing the technology and research capability for added value products will attract further investment in the industry.

Our research increases the potential value-adding, food manufacturing and export opportunities for especially plant based-food.

Current opportunity:

South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI)’s food pilot laboratory offers innovators in food tech the opportunity to develop new products and demonstrate scalable food processes. The work can be performed as contracted work or funded through other sources accessible to the client.

The food pilot laboratory's infrastructure enables experimental and pilot processing trials as well as sensory testing of the product. Most equipment is suitable for working with a range of raw materials and ingredients, both animal and plant-based.

Equipment includes:

  • Ingredient and food processing equipment (e.g. dry fractionation of grains, UHT, extruders, retort)
  • Analytical equipment (e.g. protein, fibre, RVA, texture etc)
  • Drying equipment (methods suitable also for heat-sensitive materials)

Our equipment can also be used to develop feed materials and add value into to the food processing side streams that are currently mostly going into waste.
