Opportunity description
Industry challenge
Ammonia production gives us half of global food.
It is also the most polluting chemical industrial process on our planet. Decarbonising ammonia production is an important lever that could eliminate 2% of current global emissions. Currently, fossil-fueled Haber-Bosch plants supply 99% of the world’s ammonia. These are hard to electrify, with complex and inflexible engineering, high CapEx and spiralling operational costs. That’s why Nium is not electrifying or modifying Haber-Bosch. We’re replacing it.
Powered by renewable energy, Nium’s modular, small-scale reactors utilise green hydrogen to produce clean ammonia at lower pressures and temperatures compared to traditional methods. This approach enables decarbonised, decentralised, and democratised ammonia production, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future in energy, agriculture, and fuel.
Current opportunity
Nium is seeking investment and partnerships to scale its clean ammonia production technology, which uses a patented nanocatalyst and modular reactors to support applications in agriculture, renewable energy storage, and sustainable fuels.
Nium offers a proven technology at TRL 5, is partnering with HydGene Renewables, Sydney, and Tait Pastoral, NSW, to demonstrate a circular decentralised process for production of low-carbon renewable hydrogen from waste straw and conversion into clean ammonia fertiliser for on-farm use.
Opportunity background
Founded in 2022, UK-based startup Nium moved into our state-of-the-art 7,300 sq. ft. headquarters at Milton Park, UK, in 2024, boosting our R&D capabilities. We've installed three advanced prototypes, complete with electrolysers and nitrogen compressors — demonstrating the most efficient ammonia plant in the world at TRL5.
Potential other applications
Nium’s technology also supports hydrogen storage for renewables and sustainable industrial processes.
