Hort Innovation: Mango auto harvester

Opportunity for

  • Machinery manufacturing and distribution companies interested in new products and services

  • Agronomy service companies interested in new products and services

Opportunity description

Industry challenge: The mango industry, like other tree crop industries, is reliant on manual harvesting. This is becoming increasingly problematic with labour shortages and the overall cost of harvesting and is impacting on the ability of the Australian industry to expand.

Current opportunity: Hort Innovation and Central Queensland University (CQU) with support from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) Rural R&D for Profit grant has developed a prototype harvester that can identify and pick fruit from the tree at commercially viable rates. In-field machine vision technology is used to detect the number and size of fruit on mango trees and is integrated into a harvesting platform. An opportunity exists for machinery manufacturing and agronomy services companies that are interested in commercialising the platform and vision technology.

Other opportunities: The technology has potential to expand into other tree crops in Australia and internationally.
