Electronic platforms to increase safety at sea for commercial fishing fleets

Opportunity for

  • Solution providers, innovators, research providers and policy makers to build upon outputs of research outlined in this opportunity to improve maritime safety.

Opportunity description

Industry challenge: Maintaining safety at sea requires a multi-faceted and complex system, including coordinating vessel integrity and the carriage of the correct equipment, the provision of accurate information on weather and sea conditions, and the training of crew and managing their actions at sea.

There is a need for broad adoption of an electronic platform typically found on fishing vessels, to accurately and automatically receive a signal from Australian fishing vessels wherever they operate to determine in a timely manner if the vessel is still able to receive and transmit a signal.

Use of electronic platforms that are typically found on fishing vessels increase the maritime safety of the Australian fishing fleet.

Analysis of the range of electronic platforms found on modern fishing vessels resulted in the following recommendations that will assist in improving safety if adopted by Australian fishing industry, relevant agencies and/or the entire maritime community.

Current opportunity: Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) is seeking engagement from organisations that have potential innovative solutions, research project ideas, novel approaches to build upon outputs of the work described above to address this maritime safety challenge. The outcome of the FRDC funded research project outlined the opportunity for disruption of the maritime safety sector. 'Enquire now' to discuss potential approaches with FRDC.
