The University of Western Australia (UWA)- fertiliser spreader that increases performance – licensing opportunity

Opportunity for

  • Machinery manufacturers to invest in/license novel fertiliser disc spreader
  • Broadacre farmers to support field trials of novel fertiliser disc spreader

Opportunity description

Industry challenge:

The aim is to spread fertiliser as uniformly and as quickly as possible. However, spreading smaller particles efficiently is challenging. In Australia for example, uneven spreading of urea has been estimated to reduce crop returns by up to $40/ha.

A device has been designed to increase disc-spreader ameliorant width and uniformity of spread in adverse wind conditions.

A simple device which can be added to new spreaders coming to market and is also retrofittable (as kit) to existing machines to improve performance by overcoming adverse wind conditions. Simulations indicate significant improvements in both spread width (20% in headwind; 10% in tailwind) and distribution uniformity. The technology also has the ability to reduce asymmetry brought about by cross winds.

Current opportunity:

We designed this device to increase disc-spreader ameliorant width and uniformity of spread in adverse wind conditions. We are seeking partners to field test the device and invest in manufacturing and bringing the device to market under a license.

Opportunity background:

It a simple device which can be added to new spreaders coming to market and is also retrofittable (as kit) to existing machines to improve performance by overcoming adverse wind conditions.
