Rapid assessment of grapevine nutritional status
- Digital platform developers interested in new products and services
- Artificial Intelligence companies interested in new products and services
- Providers of vineyard technologies interested in new products and services
Industry challenge: Grapevine nutrition is a key driver of grapevine yield and profitability. Grape vine nutrition requirements are dependent on variables such as grape variety, rootstock, vine age, soil type, water availability, production and wine quality expectations. The current method to determine nutritional status in grapevines is time consuming, and the price and turn-around time of laboratory analysis limits its extensive use in the sector.
Current opportunity: Wine Australia and New South Wales Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) are developing a tool that uses leaf imagery, customised machine learning and computer vision techniques to assess nutrient deficiency/toxicity quickly and accurately. The development of a smartphone-based app will provide vineyard managers with the capability to determine nutritional status in real time and so optimise their fertiliser use. An opportunity exists for a range of companies interested in developing products and services using the technology.
Other opportunities: There is potential to translate the technology into other crops/plants where rapid and accurate nutritional status analysis will enhance management decision making.
