Indyn: platypus grain inspection platform - investment and partnership opportunity

Opportunity for

  • Partners with understanding of the agribusiness sector and an ability to actively participate in expanding the global opportunities for Platypus technologies
  • Venture capital and strategic partners seeking pre-seed stage investment, interested in biosecurity and bulk grain trading.
^This opportunity is only for professional and sophisticated investors.

Opportunity description

Industry challenge:

Producing and trading grains is complex and involves inspection and grading at many stages to confirm value and assess biosecurity risk. This is traditionally done by human inspection, but the risk and cost of error is real and considerable. These challenges impact several parts of industry but notably producers, traders, breeders and regulatory especially as it applies to biosecurity risk both outbound and inbound. The industry has been trying to solve these issues for a considerable time.

The Platypus system is based on advanced vision engineering principles to produce very high resolution images at a rate which complies with current standards. These images are processed using the latest deep learning technologies. The result is a system that can perform inspections, better than a human. This is a first in the industry.

Platypus is conceived as a modular platform which can incorporate newly emerging technologies such as SWIR and hyperspectral imaging systems. This capability makes Platypus “futureproof”. Indyn is already working on these technologies and the added value that they offer.

Indyn is also working on the certification process to ensure industry acceptability. A minimum viable product has already been built and field tested for grain trading inspection according to current GTA standards.

Current opportunity:

Indyn is seeking engagement from venture capital investors and strategic partners with a strong commitment to the grains industry, with particular interest in biosecurity, bulk grain trading etc. Indyn is open to a variety of options including equity participation on mutually agreed terms.

Opportunity background:

The industry has been trying to solve these issues for many years without success. Indyn is an industrial automation company with specific expertise in machine vision. This core experience and understanding of the key technologies is what has made Platypus the industry leading solution.

The Platypus system has been trialled at several locations including Newcastle Agri Terminal and several receival sites. The results have been very positive and show that Platypus is a viable technology for use in grain receival site applications.

Other potential applications:

Platypus is a modular system designed to incorporate new technologies. This potential includes the capacity to do Falling Number tests, mycotoxin detection and several other value adding processes. Platypus also has the capacity to determine seed variety, especially in barley. This capability is a function of the ability to collect very high resolution images and combine with a unique deep learning algorithm. Work in this area is ongoing.

Other testing has shown that Platypus can handle a wide range of biosecurity issues including inbound inspections to detect threats to Australian industry. This includes pests like Khapra beetle and BMSB along with many others. These tests and inspections are far more rigorous than anything that can be done by human inspection.

Platypus system has been designed with the grains and cereals industries in mind. Current capability includes wheat and barley. The ability to handle lentils, chick leas and several other crops is also under development.

Platypus also lends itself to alternative crops such as tree nuts, coffee, some berries and fruits. Indyn is committed to the ongoing development and deployment of this technology.
