Egg gender determination technology

Opportunity for

  • Equipment manufacturers interested in new product lines
  • Equipment distributors interested in new product lines

Opportunity description

Industry challenge: In egg production, chicks can only be sexed after hatching which creates inefficiencies in the industry. The cost of hatching male chicks and their disposal is a significant challenge in Australia (with 17 million laying hens) and internationally.

Current opportunity: Australian Eggs is funding research into the development of in-ovo egg gender determination technology for industrial and small-scale fertile egg processing. The research is using non-invasive optical methodologies based on different fluorescence of male and female chicks. Opportunities exist for equipment manufacturers and distributors interested in new product lines.

Other opportunities: Opportunity exists to expand the technology into broiler and other avian species applications.
