Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG) R&D Needs Workshop

Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG) disease is caused by a herpesvirus and was first detected in Victoria in December 2005. Since May 2021, cases of AVG in Victoria have been confirmed as far east as Cape Otway and as far west as the Discovery Bay Marine Park. This review will support those involved in the outbreak and urgently seek solutions through researching current biosecurity protocols, options for surveillance and diagnostic tools to aid rapid detection, to future proof the industry.

Integrated disease management of black core rot in citrus

This project is developing tools for the effective management of citrus black core rot, which causes internal rot and bitter flavours in infected fruit that is often undetected until it reaches the juicing plant or kitchen bench. It aims to unravel the disease cycle, including sources of inoculum and timing of infection. A post graduate will be involved throughout the project to increase the future research capability of the Australian citrus industry.

Integrated tick management communications

The management of ticks is critical for livestock production, with Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) estimating that the annual on-farm cost of cattle ticks to the Australian industry is approximately $146m. This project will deliver six practical, producer-facing articles and relevant images to inform producers about integrated tick management.

Can novel seismic survey sources mitigate potential impacts to fisheries?

This project aims to alleviate tensions between the fishing industry and proponents of 3D Marine Seismic Surveys (MSS), used by the petroleum industry to locate potential oil and gas deposits. It will test new seismic sources or ways of using current sources to mitigate potential impacts on marine animals, by assessing their impact on the commercial scallop and the southern rock lobster.

Development of regional disease risk models for fungal diseases of pyrethrum

Pyrethrum is a type of chrysanthemum which produces one of the most commonly used non-synthetic insecticides. Diseases such as ray blight and tan spot represent a major risk to yield of pyrethrum in Australia, and this project intends to develop a framework for treatment of the diseases in specific regions.

Management options and species evaluation to increase productivity in dieback affected pastures - PHASE II

Pasture dieback is a condition that causes the death of sown and native pastures by affecting plant health and function, reducing productivity. By continuing work to evaluate new practices for the control of pasture dieback, and feed options for livestock, this project will help ensure the productivity and profitability of red meat enterprises in affected regions of Queensland.

Epidemiology and management of fusarium basal rot in onions

Fusarium basal rot is a soilborne disease of increasing importance in South Australia, where infection of onion bulbs in the field has resulted in losses of up to 30% in storage in some years. This project intends to determine the epidemiology of fusarium basal rot and identify cultural, chemical and biological management options.

Shark depredation in Australian fisheries: Understanding the scope of the issue and identify potential mitigation options

Shark depredation, where a shark consumes an animal caught by fishing gear before it can be retrieved to the fishing vessel, has been nationally acknowledged as an issue for all Australian fishing industry stakeholders. This project aims to define the characteristics of the shark species and populations involved, identify the relevant traits of the fisheries, and assess the potential impacts of shark depredation, to determine ways to mitigate and manage this source of mortality.

The development of a national, grape-industry strategy for the implementation of a national standard for grapevine certification - Phase 1

The lack of a national standard for the health of planting material in Australia means that growers have no guarantee that the planting material being supplied to them by nurseries is disease free or of a certain provenance. Phase 1 of this project will address the framework required to underpin a new national standard for grapevine planting material, which will be customer-focused, independently audited, transparent, aspirational, inclusive and allow for continuous improvement.

CT20009 - Integrated disease management of citrus black spot and 'Emperor' brown spot

The Australian citrus industry has a strong export focus and must manage pesticide use carefully to ensure it meets Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) that vary in each overseas market. This project aims to identify complementary Integrated Disease Management (IDM) tools to assist growers to manage citrus black spot, 'Emperor' brown spot and citrus black core rot, in ways that ensure it complies with MRLs.
