PDS: Effective Rangeland EID Decision Making Systems

This project supports a Producer Demonstration Site (PDS) to show how the use of individual animal identification can contribute to improved profitability, productivity and sustainability in rangeland sheep enterprises. An Electronic Identification (EID) system that measures the individual animal can provide data to inform decision making for the whole flock.

Profitable Grazing Systems Package Development - Editing and Design

Profitable Grazing Systems (PGS) takes small groups of like-minded producers who want to improve their whole-farm performance and matches them with a deliverer who builds their knowledge, skills and experience through hands-on training. This project funds final stage editing, design and proofreading of the latest Profitable Grazing Systems packages and associated materials, along with updates to the Profitable Grazing Systems producer and deliverer guidebooks. All editing and design will be consistent with Meat & Livestock Australia's (MLA) branding and style guidelines.

Preliminary evaluation of electro stunning technology for farmed Barramundi

The use of humane harvest methods for fish and livestock is increasingly important to consumers and producers. The Australian Barramundi Farmers Association (ABFA) identified electro-stunning as a technology of interest to optimise the welfare of the fish while maintaining product quality. This project reviewed all available information and made recommendations to help shape the direction of future R&D into electro-stunning and its suitability for the barramundi industry.

Testing Tropicals - NSW Southern Slopes

This project will fund a Producer Demonstration Site (PDS) featuring tropical and sub-tropical pasture species in production systems on the southern slopes of New South Wales. Producers will be able to compare these species to current summer feed options (e.g. lucerne and summer-active perennials), and work out what management adaptations would be necessary to successfully incorporate these species.

Healthy Subsoils Produce More Red Meat

The Southern Australia Livestock Research Council (SALRC) promotes innovation and learning in the red meat and livestock industries of southeast Australia. This project funds a Producer Demonstration Site (PDS) to address the priority to 'Improve pasture establishment, productivity and persistence in landscapes prone to subsoil compaction or hard pan soil structure'. The project is to be conducted with the Yarra Valley Farmers and Alexandra/Mansfield Farmers Groups in north central Victoria.

Determining the Benefits of Mixed Species Pastures in a Changing Climate

Regenerative agriculture is a system of farming practices that seeks to rehabilitate and enhance the entire ecosystem of the farm through the holistic management of key facets, including soil health, water and fertiliser use. This pilot program will identify the key areas for further research to develop a scientifically robust approach to regenerative farming in Australian dairy systems.

Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG) R&D Needs Workshop

Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG) disease is caused by a herpesvirus and was first detected in Victoria in December 2005. Since May 2021, cases of AVG in Victoria have been confirmed as far east as Cape Otway and as far west as the Discovery Bay Marine Park. This review will support those involved in the outbreak and urgently seek solutions through researching current biosecurity protocols, options for surveillance and diagnostic tools to aid rapid detection, to future proof the industry.

Demonstration of safety, palatability, and efficacy of novel, sugarcane-derived feed ingredients in ruminants

Bagasse is the pulpy fibrous material that remains after sugarcane is crushed to extract its juice. The SRA has invested in new technologies to transform it into a nutritious animal feed ingredient, and this project will trial bagasse-derived fibre as a sheep feed and model potential production and markets.
